The Learning and Acquisition (L&A) method of teaching was
developed to solve critical problems with language education in Japan.
The average English learner in Japan possesses six to twelve years of formal English
study, but this background is mainly in reading, writing and translation. Very
little attention is given to listening, speaking or conversation practice in public
schools. It is therefore unlikely that the student has actually "acquired"
the language, or is able to use it successfully outside of a structured environment.
As a solution to this problem of the Japanese educational system, many private
English language schools have been established to provide students with opportunities
to listen to and speak English, but most of these schools have implemented direct
methods, omitting the "learning" part of the English language. Usually
students at these schools cannot learn how to speak English correctly due to lack
of "learning" of the language structure. |

LEARNING is important in the mastering of a language. The student
needs to learn grammar, vocabulary, and expressions to be able to speak correctly.
Although the Japanese educational system provides students with a great deal of
instruction in grammar and vocabulary, not all students have sufficient knowledge
of the language structure to speak it accurately, because most students did not
learn it in a way which would have helped to improve their speaking skills. Also,
it is not uncommon for adult students to have already forgotten most of what they
learned in public school. To overcome these challenges, AEON creates a classroom
environment where the language structure is taught through conversation rather
than through explaining or lecturing. However, this is only the first part of
the process of leading our students to become better speakers of English.
ACQUISITION of the language is essential to be able to use it in practical situations.
Once the target language structure is "learned," freer expression activities
are utilized to correctly apply the structure in a variety of situations. AEON
provides the students with the opportunity to use English in its spoken form.
This "acquisition" process adds meaning and value to the target language
structure by allowing the student to internalize the structure and use it properly
outside of the classroom. |
| For many people in Japan, daily life is such that they have
only limited learning time. Schedules are usually very busy and most activities
are, of course, conducted in Japanese. The result is that many students simply
do not have enough opportunities to relearn the structures that will enhance their
speaking abilities, or to actually utilize English in practical situations with
the structures they have learned. This is where AEON's L&A Method is of the
greatest benefit to our students. |
