I graduated from University, I wanted to teach students that were interested in
learning. Education in Japan is very important, whereas teaching in the US seems
more political. It seemed that in Japan, everything is about helping the students
progress. I liked this idea and thought it would allow me to be a real teacher.
That's why I decided to look for teaching jobs in Japan. I did extensive research
into many English language schools throughout Japan and the world. I wanted to
learn as much as possible before I applied for a position with a school. The University
I graduated from recommended AEON, so I looked into it further and came to the
conclusion that it was an excellent language school, so I applied and the rest
is history. |
I thought the Initial Training was very thorough. I was not
sure how I would be able to teach at the beginning, but the Training provided
me with enough information, and you know who to talk to if there's any problem.
I really enjoyed working in a group during the Training. Like sports, it's about
teamwork rather than about one individual. I got to know teachers from other parts
of the world, and I felt that AEON gave a lot of thought to allow teachers to
teach quality lessons.
The first few weeks of teaching were of course challenging. It's a time factor,
though. I was a little nervous but also comfortable. It's just like anything else:
you'll eventually learn how to do it. Students are as nervous as you are and also
excited to meet new teachers and to learn from you. As time went on, I really
started to understand them, and they started to know me. Students showed interest
in me and asked me a lot of questions. I am really enjoying communicating with
them. On average I have 5 to 6 classes a day. I always have lessons prepared in
advance, and I try to keep myself free as much as possible. My AEON schedule allows
me to have enough time to prepare and to interact with students outside the lessons. |
My
school is great! I think we have the greatest people working at the school. Everyone
has been so helpful in my progress and life in Japan. I don't feel like it is
a job but more like a family being at the school. I was totally amazed when the
school Manager was so caring when I caught a cold. My Head Teacher helped me with
teaching. They all care very much about every staff member and every student.
Whenever I need help, everyone is there for me. The students are all super and
work hard. Everyone that I have met is polite and so helpful. I feel very comfortable
and at ease. It's a pleasure for me to be their teacher and to get to know each
and every one of them. I do lots of things with the students and the staff: dine
out, go to karaoke, etc. I very seldom went out with my coworkers in the US, but
now I do, and I would tell people back at home that I have found friends for life!
At AEON, we listen to the students. Lots of students have brought their friends
to the school. AEON works very hard to make students feel comfortable. The AEON
teaching method is student-centered and visual, which is what I like.
I would suggest that people interested in joining AEON be culturally aware. People
should do a bit of research before their arrival in Japan. If you are prepared
for the experience of a lifetime, this would be it. If you love history, art,
food, and culture, then come to Japan, the greatest place to live and work. But
don't come thinking you will only enjoy the Japanese traditions and culture; the
fun comes from teaching! You must be very honest here, and if you are, you will
meet people who will be your friends forever. |
